What is your favourite number ?
World’s favourite number revealed to be 7 in maths blogger poll.
WE all know that the number seven is considered lucky by most people. But it now appears it is also the world’s most popular.
A British maths blogger asked people to vote for their favourite number, and more than 44 thousand responded.
Many people chimed in with birthdays and other significant dates as their favourite numbers, but when the results were finally in, the number seven came out on top.
“To be honest, this is hardly a shock,” Bellos said this week. “If you go to Las Vegas, you can’t miss the sevens all around you. “People’s strongest emotional reaction is to the number seven, and this has been true throughout history.”
Bellos has no idea why this is the case, and nor does anyone else. He says perhaps it’s because there are seven days in the week.
Revealing his inner nerd, he also suggested that it could be that there are seven visible planets in the sky, or perhaps because seven is the only number between 2 and 10 that is neither a multiple nor a factor of any other.
Planets and multiples. That’s what everyday people think of when we think of seven ... we guess?
If you ask us, seven just kind of just looks suave and cool. Also, it has two syllables, which makes it stand out in your mind as you count from one to ten.
Or maybe people like it because it’s the most common number rolled with two dice.
For the record, 3 was the second most popular number, followed by 8. The number eight in Chinese sounds like the word for prosperity, which is why the Beijing Olympics started at 8pm on 8/8/2008.
As for unlucky old number 13, it came in 6th on the survey. So while many people consider it a curse, others clearly like it too.
What is your favourite number? And why do you think so many people like the number 7? Let us know and we’ll upload as many comments as possible over the next seven hours or so.
